i think i'll miss him forever.
"did peanut like to be rubbed on the belly?", she asked.
her dad answered, "not really."
"oh."
"he liked it when i rubbed his belly", i said quietly as i remembered to myself how he would roll over and put his front paws up so i could reach his chest. he would hug my hand to him and purr like a locomotive.
"i think he liked it when i rubbed his belly too", she responded.
"no, it was just your mom. he was her cat", dad said while reminiscing to himself.
"but he was my cat too", she reminded.
"yes, but it was just different. i was his mom."
a little confused, but without skipping a beat and in all seriousness she asked, "mom, you were a cat?"
